Southwestern decor and lighting is a mix of styles originating from the Spanish in Mexico and combined with Native American designs and materials. When the Spanish originally arrived in the Southwest area,  there were very few raw materials, metals or even colors to use.  So a more rustic, hand made look became the style. Over the years that look gradually became fancier and more finished, but with the same geometric style.  Native American figures and natural materials are just as popular today as in the past.  The popular "adobe" squared off style of home with flat roofs are still popular though the insides may be contemporary or a mix of styles. This  blending of styles allows for a wider variety of lighting design options and color choices. To best accent the artwork and styles, it is recommended to use a variety of lighting types including decorative ceiling lights and even recessed lighting with decorative trim colors. Our Southwestern track lighting is a good way to illuminate specific areas such as kitchens or living rooms and add a design pop that regular lighting simply can’t provide. Southwestern design is all about using distinctive colors, designs and shapes and not blending everything together. Every element should stand on it’s own and bring it's own charm to the room.
There are all sorts of southwestern texture options and colors from muted blacks to bright turquoise.  The style often includes light to medium toned hand carved pine wood furniture and accessories that were native to the areas, tile floors and hand made pueblo style artwork. Colorful woven cotton rugs in Southwestern themes are a great way to punch up color and warmth in the room. Punched tin metal work is a very traditional Spanish style that is used for lighting and furniture. Traditionally it was made from tin and then upgraded to copper as more metals gradually became available and the wealth of the area grew with more trading and population growth. The overall effect being to create a comfortable, natural and homey feel that is relaxing yet with a twist of colors and styles.  Be daring and original! Southwestern style homes tend to be open, bright and inviting with lots of natural materials and warm  colors.
The latest trend in lighting is called Contemporary Southwestern or Transitional Southwestern which is a mix of traditional southwest style with almost an industrial aspect such as repetitive patterned punched steel.  As with all artwork, you should always choose whatever styles of lights and colors you enjoy the most.  Don't be afraid to mix and match styles, designs and colors.  Of course we offer one of the widest selection  of Southwestern lighting fixtures anywhere with new lighting models every month.
Our southwestern style lights also work well in western or ranch style homes and can be mixed with traditional western style lighting.  Or add some western designs options such as the horse or diamond models. The color pallet is very similar for both styles and it's fun to mix things up a bit.  One important thing to remember about outdoor metal wall sconces is that they are an indirect source of lighting and can also be configured for Dark Sky lighting with a solid top.  This means that the light is concentrated nearer to the wall they are mounted on and does not project as far out as a clear glass style lantern.  The advantage is both a softer, less glaring light and the beautiful artistic effects you can have with the cut out designs and textures, something regular lanterns simply cannot offer.  Imagine your house as a blank canvas and these lights will be the artwork that brings it to life both at day and at night. That is why we show both daytime and evening views of the lights for you to appreciate their true beauty. Even our southwestern style bathroom and ceiling lights feature the same intricate patterns and cut out designs that we are famous for.  If you are ready to dress up the walls of your home, we have just the way to do it.
